About Meriturva

Meriturva is a state educational institution whose mission is to improve maritime safety for both professional and amateur seafarers. We operate under the guidance of the Finnish National Board of Education. Our Fire Training Unit is located in Upinniemi, Kirkkonummi and our Survival Training Unit and administration in Lohja.

As an audited institution, our basic approach is to train students and professional seafarers in accordance with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization's STCW standard.

Our aim is to provide a safe and as realistic learning environment as possible to expose students to same challenges as in their work environment. We use a comprehensive range of authentic firefighting, survival and evacuation equipment. Meriturva also participates in many maritime safety development projects.

Our customers include not only professional seafarers, but also port staff, maritime authorities, rescuer swimmers and aircrews. We also organise safety courses for boaters and ship passengers.

We are the only organization in Finland to offer Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET). In addition to domestic helicopter crews, helicopter crews from several neighbouring countries (Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) visit Meriturva come to Meriturva for HUET training.

We continuously strive to reduce our carbon footprint and environmental impact wherever possible. In Fire Training Unit, old fuel oil-burning simulators have been replaced by low-emission LPG simulators and we put effort to sustainable handling of used fire-fighting water. The Survival Training Unit's lighting has been switched to LED and the roof is equipped with solar power plant . Meriturva offers Electric vehicle charging points for our customers.

We are certified to the ISO 9001:2015 quality management system (Bureau Veritas Certification) to ensure the development and continuous improvement of our operations. We are Finland's national representative in IASST (International Association for Safety and Survival Training), an organization that develops the industry expertise worldwide.
