Presentation of the Fire Training Unit

Firefighting and rescue

Completion of an approved crew fire training course is now a prerequisite for working on board a ship. Over the years, the Meriturva Fire Training Unit has trained more than 70 000 maritime professionals.

Courses in the Fire Training Unit teach smoke diving, rescue and fire fighting. The courses include a theoretical part as well as a debriefing of the performances and exercises. A certificate is awarded for successful completion of the course.

Meriturva's Fire Training Unit provides certified basic and advanced training for seafarers and our clientele is mainly composed of maritime professionals. However, some of our courses are fully customised.

Versatile fire training simulators

The Fire Training Unit has built several fire training simulators for different purposes, the latest being a smoke diving simulator simulating a ship. The simulator ship is used to learn how to conduct firefighting and rescue missions and to navigate in real conditions - in the dark and in smoke.

The tank simulators will be used to learn how to rescue ships from their bottom tanks and to combat liquid spills. In the flameout simulator, they observe the development of a fire and practise extinguishing cabin fires.

The Meriturva fire training unit also features a tilting cabin simulator that is unique in the world. The tilting simulator gives you a feel for how difficult it is to rescue and recover when a ship is tilted, as is often the case in an accident.

The smoke diving simulator is used to practice fire-fighting attacks and smoke diving. We use liquefied petroleum gas for the exercises, which ensures an environmentally friendly and healthy training environment.

In addition, the Meriturva fire training unit can also be used to practice extinguishing gas fires with a separate gas detection simulator and fighting gas leaks.
