Instructions for participants in Survival Training

Welcome to Meriturva Survival Training Unit. Please read these instructions before your course.

Training Location

The Meriturva Survival Training Unit is located in Lohja. Map and directions can be found at from the contact page.

Free parking is available in the yard of the unit. There are four electric car charging points (22 kW, Type 2) available that are subject to charge.

Health

The training usually includes swimming, climbing and other physical exertion. Thus, it is important that the course participant is in good health. If you are in normal fit condition, you will pass the training.

If you are unsure whether your health is good enough to participate in the course, or if you are pregnant, please discuss with your doctor whether you can participate in the training. You may not participate in the course while under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances. For more information about the content and level of difficulty of the course, please contact the Course Coordinator.

The participants assess their own health in the Participation Form before the course. The personnel of Meriturva have the right to refuse a person's participation in the training due to health or other reasons.

Equipment

There are two changing rooms with lockers for students to use. Please bring your own toiletries and towel. If you need more privacy or a gender-neutral dressing room, please contact us before arriving at the course.

Meriturva will provide you with a cotton overall, sneakers, a life vest and a helmet. Bring yourself a swimsuit or undergarment and socks for sneakers. Please note that these will get wet during the training.

During HUET courses, Meriturva will provide you with a drysuit, warm mid-suit and a helmet, but we recommend using your own drysuits. Bring your own warm underwear (e.g. undergarment) and socks. Please note that these will get wet during the training.

For the Rescue Boat courses, Meriturva will provide you with the necessary protective clothing for outdoor training. Please make sure that you have weather-appropriate clothing under your protective clothing.

You may use your own clean life vests, outfits and equipment during the training with the permission of Meriturva staff. Meriturva is not responsible for the course participants' own equipment or any damage that may occur to it.

In GWO training, Meriturva provides the necessary training clothing, protective and fall protection equipment, as well as dry suits and life jackets for water exercises. The participant must bring the underwear or swimwear worn under the training clothes. GWO training also includes the possibility to use personal protective and fall protection equipment as well as dry suits and life jackets.

Before the training, all jewelry and other items that can come loose and fall into the water or get caught on equipment must be removed. Valuables should be left at home, as Meriturva is not responsible for property lost in lockers or other premises. With the instructor's permission, you may use a phone or take photos, but the equipment is at the participant's own risk.

Catering and Accommodation

Course participants in Lohja can dine in Meriturva's restaurant Merituuli. If you have any special diet or allergy, please inform us min. three days beforehand. Accommodation is available at our course hotel, more information from the accommodation page.

Order

It is important to follow the instructions of the staff in the Meriturva’s premises. In the event of a fire alarm, everyone must move to the assembly area in the yard.

Customers are responsible for any damage or costs they may cause to Meriturva or other customers. Any deficiencies must be reported to Meriturva personnel as soon as possible.

Smoking is only permitted in the designated smoking area in the yard

Insurance Cover

Meriturva Maritime Safety Training Centre does not have a separate accident insurance for those participating in training. The participants must always be covered by their employer, the State Treasury or other insurance policy. Please make sure that your insurance coverage is in order before the beginning of the training.

Those studying at their employer's expense are covered by their employer's statutory accident insurance in accordance with the "Workers' Compensation Act" (459/2015).

The State Treasury covers students of state-owned educational institutions. Those that participate in the course at their own expense are also considered covered by the State Treasury's policy. Compensation may be paid to the aforementioned persons in accordance with the "Act on Compensation for Accidents Occurring in Work-like Conditions while Studying" (460/2015). Students from other than state-owned educational institutions are covered by their own educational institution's insurance policy.

By a decision of the Ministry of Education and Culture (VN/9331/2022-OKM-1), Meriturva Maritime Safety Training Centre has the right to organise advanced or supplementary vocational training in accordance with Section 8 of the "Act on Vocational Education and Training" (531/2017).

Accidents caused by an error or negligence of a government official will be handled in accordance with the "Act on State Indemnity Operations" (978/2014) and the "Tort Liability Act" (412/1974).

Please note! In training organised by third parties, responsibilities will be defined in a separate facility rental agreement.

Payment of the Course

The course fee is paid online upon registration. Meriturva's contract customers can also pay by invoice. The invoice will be sent to the given billing address after the course. The participant in the course is responsible for the accuracy of the billing information and for having a valid commitment from the customer company. The participant is responsible for the fees billed afterwards if the company refuses to pay the invoice.

Cancellation

All cancellations must be made no later than two weeks before the course begins. For any cancellation performed at a later date, we will charge 50% of the price of the course. If a person who has registered for a course does not show up and has not cancelled the reservation, we will charge the full price of the course.

Cancellations must be made using the edit link in the confirmation message or by email to info@meriturva.fi. By cancellation of a prepaid course a cancellation fee of 25 € will be withheld.

Request for Rectification

If a student is dissatisfied with the assessment of his/her coursework, he/she has the right to request a correction from Meriturva orally or in writing within 14 days of becoming aware of the results of the assessment. Written requests for rectification should be sent to kirjaamo@meriturva.fi with the heading Request for rectification. Meriturva will issue a decision on the request for rectification within a reasonable time.
